Star Wars Galaxies Finally Gets Put Down

After 9 long years, the Star Wars MMO bits the bullet, err, laser.

Today, it was announced that the Sony published MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies would be shut down for good, effective December 15, 2011.

As most may be aware, Galaxies has a pretty rocky history. First releasing in the North America in June of 2003, the game went through numerous changes through it’s 9 year run. The most notable being the “upgrades” that changed the game significantly, segmenting the community. Some were pissed off and stopped playing, others were delighted, though, if I recall correctly, the former was the majority. The game is still  able to be purchased and played through Sony Online Entertainment’s Station.com service, but they have deactivated the store and you are no long able to buy subscription packs. Starting September 15th, they will stop selling the actual game, as well as the trading card spin-off. Billing stops as of October 15th. Then, on December 15th, the game will be shut down. SOE invites all the players to participate in the week long “Galaxy-Ending Event”, that should begin one week before the game is to shut down.

As compensation for the subscribers who have already paid for their subscription, they will receive a free game trial for all other SOE published MMO’s. These include: Everquest, Everquest 2, Free Realms, Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, and DC Universe Online. The trails begin on October 15th and end on December 31st.

Here’s hoping they send off this game right, and just blow the entire galaxy the hell up, and just put the lifeless body of Jar Jar Binks as the defunct login screen.

About Addison

Addison is a bit of a jerk. His favorite game is The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. This is really all there is to him. Very hollow, very boring.
